Correction of Common Errors
In this section many common grammatical mistakes are corrected through exemplar sentence. The example sentences are chosen from the old Calcutta University Matriculation and Higher Secondary Examination question papers.
Calcutta University Matriculation Examination (CUME) 1910
Incorrect: All but he had fled.
Correct:    All had fled but he had not fled.
Incorrect: None but the brave deserve the fair.
Correct:    None but the brave deserves the fair
Incorrect: He is much the cleverest boy of the two.
Correct:    He is much the cleverer boy of the two.
Incorrect: He asked for an alms.
Correct:    He asked for alms.
Incorrect: If I were strong enough to work, I am strong enough to look after me.
Correct:    If I was strong enough to work, I am strong enough to look after me.
Incorrect: I do not like those sort of people.
Correct:    I do not like that sort of people.
Incorrect: This man is different to that.
Correct:    This man is different from that.
