Chapter 1. Letter, Word, Sentence
1.1 Introduction
Dear little friend, let you enter into the treasure of English language which is a rich
medium of the expression of ideas of mind. Don't fear, other languages are not easy to
the English. Let us take the language easy.
When we speak, we make sound. Wave of sound rises, words come one after another.
The most little part of this sound wave is expressed through some lines drawn
in different ways. The smallest part of such sound drawn in line is called Letter.
So letter is the written representation of the smallest sound in English language.
The whole different ideas of our mind are expressed through 26 letters. These
letters are A, B, C,...,Z. These are capital types. All these letters are called Alphabet
as a whole. There are small types also. Such as a, b, c, ..., z. All these two types are
also written pulling lines or scripts.
All these letters are two types: (i) vowel (ii) consonant. Vowels are self
sounded. They are five like a, e, i, o, u.
The remaining twenty one letters are consonants. They take the help of vowel in
each of their utterances or to sound them. Such as, when we utter ‘B’, the last tone becomes ‘e’ like.
Those consonants are b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x,
y, z.
Now see, when we write those letters side by side and it expresses some thing that
has a meaning, we call them words. As for example, pen; it denotes something by
which we write. There are two letters i.e. a and i that have self meaning like one
and first person respectively. So they may also be called words. Thus word is a well
combination of letters having a certain meaning.
